the laughing heart
Every Wednesday I share another’s words of wisdom, exploring how I can apply this wisdom to my own life. Please join in the conversation and share your thoughts in the comments section. Because if you’re anything like me, you have a lot to learn in this life.
“The Laughing Heart” by Charles Bukowski
your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.
A dear reader and friend shared this profound poem with me recently. I recommend you listen via the video clip as you read.
How has the brand new year treated you thus far? For me, it has not been without its challenges, which I won’t go into here because in the grand scheme of life, these challenges are but a hiccup. An annoying, expensive, and potentially dangerous hiccup, but nothing else. (Thank you to my angels.)
As Bukowski says, “your life is your life.” It is what it is. Don’t let the bad take you down because there is good, too. This is the only life we know for sure that we have, and we cannot let it get away from us. If we do, we will miss out on something beautiful. For everyone, there will be opportunities, there will be setbacks, there will be failures. Tread carefully. Pay attention to the chances you’ve been given, and take them. Never doubt your own potential.
This poem advises us on how to lead a life that is bathed in light rather than darkness. The lesson is basic, yet one that many of us need to be reminded of on a regular basis: Believe in yourself, know that you are here for a reason, and that reason is divine in nature.

This is so beautiful.
Really.
I went through a really dark period last year. I was finally diagnosed correctly with bipolar disorder (I was initially diagnosed with postpartum depression). I had an attempt at my own life and it was the wake up call. It took me so long to stand on my feet again. I vowed to myself that this year? I was going to rock it.
Like you said, they are just hiccups.
I know that last year was a really bad moment in my life.
It was a moment.
It wasn’t forever.
There is always light.
And hang on to hope with all that you’ve got.
I’m writing this poem down and tucking it away for a rainy day.
Thank you

I’m glad you’re getting help. Now, you have your whole life at your feet, including a beautiful family who worships the ground you walk on. I don’t know you well, but I can already see your light. This poem was written for us..
