“Michelangelo once said that the greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that our aim is actually too low and we reach it.

Most often we set a goal we think we can achieve.

There is something in every one of us that is greater than the circumstances we are facing.

Today let’s pause for just a moment now and ponder – what would be a goal I would set if I didn’t believe I could fail?

So what if you stretch for the sun and you hit the moon? Go ahead and reach!”

What do you think? Is this idea that everyone can achieve greatness inspiring to you? Or do you think it is an example of romanticized optimism?

Where do your goals fit in the spectrum? Within your reach, completely beyond your reach, or somewhere in the middle?

  1. This is a very good point. I will have to give this some thought. I am in the process of determing some goals for my blog so this is very timely.

  2. This is very inspiring to me. I have several professional goals that I continue to feel the urge to lower my expectations, but this reminded me to leave the bar set high.

Thanks for the inspiration today! I “liked” it on Facbook and also recommended through StumbleUpon.

I agree with Michelangelo. We should all aim high, but of course we won’t always reach our goal. I am cautious by nature, and a realist too, so I set myself goals that are optimistic, but real nonetheless :)

oh i have always loved this quote – I think my goals are within reach, I’ve been on this remarkable journey these past few years that has included stretching me outside of my comfort zone and not holding myself back, really shining that light – thanks for the post!

So ironic, I am planning a post about setting goals too. I think Michelangelo was spot on. When we achieve what we set our sights on, and if we aim too low, we never take off.

I am struggling with my goal – not sure how to attain it – asking the universe for help.

    small goal being to post
    bigger, getting published
life time achievement goal – complete book
dream of all dreams goal – book is published, turned into major motion picture and julia roberts is NOT in it.

i think it’s inspiring to a point. i do think there is a lot of romanticism around the belief that if you want it bad enough, you can make it happen. because that isn’t necessarily the case.

I think there is much truth to those words. The majority of us settle for mediocrity and do not bother to challenge ourselves or reach the potentials that we have within. I don’t know why….perhaps fear of success or fear of failure? Whichever one, the result is the same: creative stagnation.

    IMHO…

    1. There are people who reach a point higher than their abilities (The Peter Principle)

There are people who never reach their full potential because of…(see answer #1)

There are people who are stiffled from reaching some, most or all of their goals (See answer #1)

There are people who get where they are going…Not sure why, some people seem to have Great Luck!

And finally, I agree with Michelangelo, it does seem to happen that way also, it just depends on which end of the spectrum of life you are.
